Nest Update 4-30-14 – A Respite And The Deer Visit

Good Evening, Fellow DryingDenizens of the Cottonwood!

Before we get started tonight I want to let you know that Friday’s blog will be a guest blog by none other than our own Eaglessoarfree. Make sure you don’t miss it, it’s a beauty!

Newsflash! The weathermen were wrong! Wait, what? You say that’s not unusual?? Oh, OK, thanks for the reminder!! 🙂

Wednesday on the nest was a drying out day. In spite of a few light showers early and some drizzle later Mom and Dad managed to get mostly dry grass covering the majority of the nest. Then, in their famous fashion, they dug up all of the wet stuff under the dry and things were just about the same as when they started. Arky and Dakota were bewildered several times as they were buried under wet and dry alike. Dakota played jack-in-the-box in the dry grass as Arky claimed the warm spot under Mom. Grass deliveries mixed with a few corn husks and one small stick by Dad continued for most of the day. Both Arky and Dakota were well fed during the day with Dakota getting bonked by Arky several times and having to wait for her turn to eat. Arky’s crop was so big all day it was amazing she could even raise her head much less bonk anyone.

In the afternoon as BBC was looking around the homestead 2 yearling deer were spotted grazing in the field to the left of the cam mount. They hung out for a good long while and on a second look were even lying down with another buddy of theirs taking it easy as the day wore on. BBC panned back later and they were still there but on the last look after it started to drizzle a bit they had headed for their sheltered spot and were not seen again.

Mama Goose got a reprieve also today as the pond hasn’t risen any more. She was sitting her nest in royal fashion and several times today we heard Dad Goose chasing off more intruders and keeping the nest safe.

Late in the day Dad was keeping the kids warm and then got up to feed them. It seemed like he had filled them to capacity when Mom showed up and in a fit of motherliness took the food from Dad in a way that seemed like she was saying to him” You’re doing it all wrong!’. What ensued was a comical tug of war as Dad dug up nestovers that had seen better days and Mom tried to snatch them all away as he came up with them. They jousted back and forth with Dad finally claiming a small nestover for himself and moving to the far side of the nest. Mom then proceeded to feed the eaglets again and when she was done neither one could hold their head up as their crops were too heavy. Darkness fell soon after with Mom on the kids sleeping with her head tucked for the first time in a few days. Hope they all get some good rest tonight.

There were so many great videos today that I can’t list them all here. You can find them on dragonlainey’s YouTube page by clicking on any of their videos below. BirdBrain56 has a wonderful compilation for the month of April for us today.

If you have been wondering where the mods went we are here: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/for-the-love-of-nests-critters If you tire of the arguing, lack of answers, trolls, and bad information in the unmoderated chat at the cam page please come visit us and we will welcome you with open arms.
