Good Evening, Fellow EarPluggers!!
Another fine day on the nest that had plenty of squees, sitting in trees and a late evening wrestling match over a duck for supper. The morning started quiet with the cam on the nest. Late morning brought an audio treat of the kids squeeing up a storm in the tree at what we don’t know. Things were quiet after that with the occasional call from near or far. A Parent and a juvie were spotted in the car counting tree late afternoon just taking it easy. A hawk was seen again on the far pole waiting for its meal to put in an appearance. A couple of deer were seen grazing on whatever is growing across the road but they were spooked by something and made a quick exit stage right into the woods. The ponds duck family was out and about today but seemed smaller than the last time we saw them.
Evening brought us the highlight of the day. The cam was pointed out over the pond when we heard something land on the nest. This brought both of the juvies flying in over the pond and the quick exit of the Parent back in the same direction. As the cam panned to the nest we spotted both Arky and Dakota there engaged in a struggle for possession of the duck that was delivered. The duck went back and forth several times with each one getting some bites in before possession changes. Mom came (or returned) to the nest during this and things got really interesting. I have never seen a meal on a nest like this. It was everyone for themselves and the duck became the hot potato flying around from talon to talon. Mom tried to feed Arky but for the first time I have seen she wanted to do it herself and fought Mom for the food. Dakota tired of the fracas after a bit and went out to the branch to squee her displeasure. Mom stood on the nest waiting for Arky to give her an opportunity to steal it again. She eventually did and then still fought Mom for a final piece. All in all supper lasted for an hour and 20 minutes and when it was finally done both juvies were on the high perch and Mom was off to her other night perch. Quite the ending to the day. Oh, I forgot to mention turn your sound down, the squees are loud and constant during the meal. Dragonlainey’s vid below has the highlights.
On to the vids and pics of the day.
