Nest Update 7-23-14 – Touch And Go’s And Some Flubbed Landings…

Good Evening, Fellow ControlTowerDwellers!!

There was so much traffic in and out of the tree today it seemed we had moved to O’Hare Airport. The cam was down for most of the morning and when it finally came up we saw Mom come in for a landing. The juvies took turns flying out to the yonder dead tree perch and returning for a stay on the fledge branch below the cam. Some nice close ups of both by the panner gave us some great scaps. Later in the day both took turns on the nest again playing hockey with the turtle shell, moving sticks around, looking for the diving board from last year and resurrecting the bones from the fawn leg that had drifted over the edge of the nest.

The evening saw Dakota out on the yonder perch enjoying the sunset. Arky came flying in to join him but flubbed the landing and ended up somewhere below on a different perch than she had planned on. Dakota eventually went down to keep her company and both were seen flying off and then heard landing in the tree somewhere out of cam range. The resident orioles sang a lullaby as the light faded and another gorgeous MNB Nest day came to an end.

Nest Update 7-9-14 – A Tasty Fishy And A Full Branching!

Good Evening, Fellow BranchLeapers!!

As the day started with calm winds and copious sunshine it looked to be a very nice Hump Day in the cottonwood. The cam was on the nest most of the morning until we lost the feed around 10am. It came back up about 1230pm just in time for a fishy delivery to the nest. Daki came fluttering down from his high perch and claimed it for his own. Arky was heard in the tree but didn’t come to the nest to vie for possession. Daki then had himself a real nice lunch of tasty fishy and filled his crop. He went up to the mount perch to digest and feak his beak. After a few minutes Mom came down and Daki let her know he was not happy she was going to finish his fish. Finally he jumped down to the nest and Mom shared what was left with him by feeding him bites. She, of course, got the tail for her efforts.

Daki then retired to Arky’s low branch perch and spent the afternoon preening, crop dropping and napping away the warm hours of the day. A couple of times it looked like he was going to try a leap across to the fat branch where Dad sometimes sits but he changed his mind every time. Well, until early evening, that is.

Around 7 in the evening he finally decided it was time to go. He was fairly far out on the low branch and he made the leap across to the branch that hangs down toward the ground from Dad’s perch branch. He hung out there for a while and then made the leap back to where he started. Some were saying he fledged and some were saying No he only branched as that is part of the nest tree. I like to give him credit for at least half a fledge as he bravely leapt across a 75 foot fall with grace and aplomb. I hope he finds his way to the larger part of the sky tomorrow and plays games with his sister on the silky Minnesota breezes. As darkness fell he was sitting on that perch where he landed dreaming of flights to come.

On to the vids and pics of the day.

So you can compare intruder juvies here is the video from the day the cam came back on this year that shows the intruder. I think they look very similar.

Nest Update 6-28-14 – Big Brunch And A Small Storm

Good Evening, Fellow MimosaMakers!!

Saturday dawned early (don’t they all this time of year?) and Arky and Dakota were up and at ’em early also doing laps, wingersizing, taking trips out on the branch, and up the trunk. Mom and Dad made it a memorable brunch by first bringing a full size aquatic avian and then a fish to the nest. The usual squabbles accompanied the arrival of the bird but when the fish arrived the mood seemed to settle down and A & D traded off having servings from both bits of prey. At one point it seemed that there might be nestovers if only for a short while. The rest of the prey was consumed over the course of the morning and full crops led to a calm and lazy day on the nest. Some stick play was noted and some rails were rearranged. Dakota was still playing games with Arky pretending he had something tasty and Arky would rush in from her branch or the trunk to see what it was.

A line of storms formed south of the nest in the early afternoon and brushed by the nest area with just a minimum of rain falling on the nest. The eagles were lucky as that batch of storms caused flooding and mayhem in the Twin Cities for the rest of the day. After the rain Mom and Dad repaired to the far power pole perch for some privacy and peace and quiet. The panner was kept busy trying to keep track of where everyone was and did a fine job of that. The evening hours saw Mom return to the high perch accompanied by squees from A & D when they thought there might be more food being delivered. When they realized this wasn’t the case they each settled in to a spot for the night, Arky on her branch under the cam mount and Dakota on the mount itself just off the trunk perch. As darkness fell another light show from a storm to the south gave us glimpses of Dakota’s silhouette against an angry sky.

Oh, and before I forget we thought we had another sighting of Chatterus Spyonicus today but it seemed they were more interested in the ruminants dining on whatever is growing in the field across the road than the eagles. So I guess we sighted just the common variety of Citizenus Deerlookerus that can be found almost anywhere. Oh, well!

Owl??? Attack At Decorah

Since the MNB cam was down I was watching the Decorah nest and an owl?? was doing fast fly-by attacks on the juvies there. This happened about 12:15am their time.

Here is a vid from Dragonlainey: http://youtu.be/fOCYiAdTNdw

And the same video with the attacks slowed down. Rick feels that it was an owl.

Nest Update 5-14-14 – Neck Stretching And Scaring The Chatters!

Good Evening, Fellow Cottonwoodlians!!

Today looked the way May is supposed to look and feel (well except for the temps). Fluffy clouds in an azure sky, trees filling in with foliage, grass springing up and young animals growing larger.

Arky and Dakota are growing rapidly and every day brings change. Feathers are filling in, talons are growing out and hineys are getting heavier. It seems every time I look up at the screen they are starting to eat, are eating or are just settling into a food coma after finishing eating. Mom and Dad (despite some chatters going “There’s nothing on the nest, they must be starving!!”) are doing a great job of delivering food and plenty of it. The menu has been varied and filling. Fish and ducks have been the staples with a few more exotic noshes thrown in. The kids are well on their way, after a month of existence, to becoming the great eagles they were hatched to be.

Arky and Dakota spent most of the day in the prone position near the edges of the nest for the next round of Scare The Chatters. A lot of the chatters have gotten wise to their tactics so they stepped up their game a bit today. Full neck stretches over the back side of the nest were just one of the ploys they used today. They would take turns sitting up and looking innocent when they thought Mom or Dad was looking their way.

Arky was a bit of a stinker at times today but it seems more routine than vicious now. Dakota gave it back a bit but seems to be resigned to his fate. Wait until food deliveries start and Arky will always be last to the plate!

Some great eagle flying was caught on cam again today and Mom and Dad both posed again today. Mom (or it might have been Dad) also did the round trip in and out of the nest with some skunky nestovers again today. This is a new thing for them this year and has given us some great fly-ins to watch. As darkness slowly fell the full moon rose through the clouds and BBC left the cam on pond view again for a spectacular view of the moon on the water.

Nest Update 5-07-14 – Heat, Humidity And A Flashy Day’s End!

Good Evening, Fellow SweatMoppers!!

It was a sultry spring day on the nest. 70˚ temps and lots of moist air coming up from down south made for a day of naps and lazing about. It was cloudy most of the day so at least the eaglets weren’t roasting in the sun. Can’t wait until the mighty cottonwood leafs out so they get a little shade.

First breakfish was nestovers. Mom decided that wasn’t good enough and went to the Flying Fish Market and came home with a whopper. Crops were properly filled and Mom and Dad took turns bringing in new grass for the naps to come. About mid-morning Arky and Dakota squared off for a bonkfest. Dakota gave as good as he got before finally going down to defeat. It’s good to see him finally standing up for himself.  Sound went out for a bit midday but when it came back on the monthly tornado siren test was in progress. It’s a scary sound to hear those but they have saved many lives.

Lunch was nestover fishcakes and afterward naps were the order of the day. Late in the afternoon another coot gave its all and dinner was served. Everyone was sated and they settled in for the evening. After it became deep dark lightning could be seen and it rained a bit at the nest. The storms just skirted the nest area but BBC panned the cam to the pond view and we were treated to a light show that continues to this hour. I hope the rest of the storms miss the nest, too.

On to the vids and pics of the day!
