Nest Update 6-28-14 – Big Brunch And A Small Storm

Good Evening, Fellow MimosaMakers!!

Saturday dawned early (don’t they all this time of year?) and Arky and Dakota were up and at ’em early also doing laps, wingersizing, taking trips out on the branch, and up the trunk. Mom and Dad made it a memorable brunch by first bringing a full size aquatic avian and then a fish to the nest. The usual squabbles accompanied the arrival of the bird but when the fish arrived the mood seemed to settle down and A & D traded off having servings from both bits of prey. At one point it seemed that there might be nestovers if only for a short while. The rest of the prey was consumed over the course of the morning and full crops led to a calm and lazy day on the nest. Some stick play was noted and some rails were rearranged. Dakota was still playing games with Arky pretending he had something tasty and Arky would rush in from her branch or the trunk to see what it was.

A line of storms formed south of the nest in the early afternoon and brushed by the nest area with just a minimum of rain falling on the nest. The eagles were lucky as that batch of storms caused flooding and mayhem in the Twin Cities for the rest of the day. After the rain Mom and Dad repaired to the far power pole perch for some privacy and peace and quiet. The panner was kept busy trying to keep track of where everyone was and did a fine job of that. The evening hours saw Mom return to the high perch accompanied by squees from A & D when they thought there might be more food being delivered. When they realized this wasn’t the case they each settled in to a spot for the night, Arky on her branch under the cam mount and Dakota on the mount itself just off the trunk perch. As darkness fell another light show from a storm to the south gave us glimpses of Dakota’s silhouette against an angry sky.

Oh, and before I forget we thought we had another sighting of Chatterus Spyonicus today but it seemed they were more interested in the ruminants dining on whatever is growing in the field across the road than the eagles. So I guess we sighted just the common variety of Citizenus Deerlookerus that can be found almost anywhere. Oh, well!

Nest Update 6-19-14 – Record Rain And A Tasty Fishy!

Nest Update 6-19-14 – Record Rain And A Tasty Fishy!

Good Evening, Fellow SoakedNesters!!

It was a night and day of rain again in the cottonwood. An all night (practically) light show led into a day of showers and wind. The cam was down for most of the morning but when it came back up Arky and Dakota were seen playing with a new turtle shell and some fur that looked rabbitish so it seems that they had something for breakfish today. They spent the day trying to catch up on sleep and trying to keep out of the wind. Mom showed up with a large tasty fishy mid-afternoon. Arky again beakered Dakota, who went submissive, and then ate her fill. The cam went out again before the end of the feeding but when it came back on both were seen to have full crops and there was only scales left of the fishy. It was pouring rain again but in one of the breaks in the rain in the early evening a rainbow was seen out past Mom and Dad’s power pole perch. Mom and Dad were spotted out at the pole a bit earlier but when the panner went to look for them again only one was still there. As the sun set behind the clouds the eaglets were snuggled in for the night in a very soggy nest that we hope gets a chance to dry out in the very near future.

Image

Boy, I sure hope the rain is done for a while!

Well, the forecast is for a couple of fairly dry days to come so maybe the eagles and all of Minnesota will get some respite from the rain. They certainly need it as rainfall records have been broken all over the state. The island Atlantis in the pond has lived up to it’s name and is now completely submerged. I estimate the level of the pond has risen almost a foot in the past week and looks to be at nearly the level of some of the historical photos of when it first formed. Anyway here’s hoping that everyone gets a chance to dry out soon.

We’ll see you on the nest tomorrow!

Nest Update 6-2-14 -Three Cheers For Fast Moving Fronts!

Good Evening, Fellow SunAficionados!!

The prediction for the nest was rain for a good part of the day Monday but as usual they were a bit off with that estimate. The morning dawned beautiful and the drying out process began. Dad delivered a big tasty fishy for breakfish and everyone got to chow down and fill their crops. The day consisted of lots of preening, napping, and wingersizing. It was a good thing they had a big fishy for breakfish as the cupboard was bare for the rest of the day. Arky and Dakota both took to nibbling on anything in the nest that looked the least bit promising to provide a little nourishment.

Mom and Dad treated us to a couple of nice fly-ins and out as the panner was looking around today. We also spotted another turtle by the old goose nest and it looked like he helped himself to one of the eggs that remain there. Hope he doesn’t mind the smell of month old rotten eggs. One of our resident deer was seen feeding along the path in again today and at one point it was joined nearby by a red-winged blackbird. Unfortunately, Granny’s swift dark-coloured animal was no where to be seen today. The panner also gave us a look at the muddy waters flowing past the nest. No wonder not very many fish are caught from there.

As the day wore the kids ran down and slept more than anything else. As darkness fell they were snoring away contentedly on the nest as a Parent kept watch from the high perch.

Nest Update 6-1-14 – Hold On To Your Feathers, Here It Comes Again!

Good Evening, Fellow GaloshWearers!!

That storm we were watching last night?? Well, it or it’s brother continued into the early morning hours and left the eagles with a soaked nest to have breakfish on. A small aquatic avian was served up for the Sunday morning repast and Mom even left enough for Arky and Dakota to practice self feeding on and in a show of sibling affection fed each other a couple of times. The morning saw the rain abate somewhat and the kids and the nest had a chance to dry out somewhat.

Around noon Mom showed up with a tiny sunfish that Arky grabbed and mantled. Mom followed the food and she and Arky played keep away for a bit. Mom finally scored the fish and fed a few bites (it was a very small fish) to each of the kids. She left in a hurry and the eaglets went back to lolling around, drying off and wingersizing every now and then. The gnats seemed to be just as bad but the eaglets seem to be tolerating them a little better as they become a ubiquitous part of nest life.

GrannyFinch, one of our wonderful chatters, has been claiming that she was seeing a small dark animal go from the woods to the pond when the panner would look over that way. Since none of us have seen it we were a little skeptical. She asked Elaine of Dragonlainey fame to see if she could spot it on the recordings she makes. Well, lo and behold, she did. She made a vid of it and it is a fast little sucker which probably accounts for the fact that none of the rest of us saw it. Please give a look at the vid and see if you can help identify it. Thanks!

Late afternoon saw Dad deliver the back half of another aquatic avian for the afternoon meal. Mom immediately arrived to take over but Dad just stood on it for a bit and looked at Mom like, What, again?? He gave up and left after a a couple of minutes of that and the evening meal was served. Since everyone was really hungry the bird disappeared very quickly with Dakota trying to self feed as Mom fed Arky. After dinner the weather again turned wet and wild and as the sun set soggy was again the name of the game. The weather guys are saying there will be rain until midday tomorrow and then things will turn sunny until Wednesday when the next system rolls in.

Well, first I’m gonna start a band called Devo….

I think I will add a new feature to this blog called Silly Rumor of the Day From The Yonder Chat. I shouldn’t have any trouble finding one to post here as there are so many over there. Todays is: THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE NEST IS COLLAPSING!! This started when one of the eaglets was backing up to the edge of the nest for its morning constitutional and went a bit too far. He sorta slipped at the edge and one foot actually went off the edge. He did recover nicely and I don’t think he was really in any danger of falling but it generated all kinds of worry that ended up with the above rumor. It is amazing how small things can be blown out of proportion in a very short time.

I hope your Sunday was relaxing and fun and we’ll see you on the nest tomorrow!

Nest Update 5-19-14 – Talk About a Moanday!

Good Evening, Fellow ReallyDampPerchers!!

I once saw a joke sign that said “On this date, in this place, nothing much happened”. Kinda describes the nest today perfectly. The youngsters slept in this morning and Mom and Dad didn’t bring in breakfish. Some nibbles were scrounged from the nestovers under the carpet in the nest but it seemed like everyone was just waiting for the weather to break. And break it did. Around mid-morning the first of two waves of rain hit. That one wasn’t too bad but the second more than made up for it. Thunder, lightning, high winds and lots more rain soaked the eagles and made life a little miserable on the nest. All in, the nest area received 1.42 inches of rain today which is about 3 times what was forecast. Arky and Dakota looked more like soggy Koosh balls than eaglets after the storms. Late morning Mom brought what looked like a lichen covered tree to the nest. You can see it on the right side of the nest. Dad, not to be outdone, brought in a treetop that he had trouble placing. He tried several different places, in the process stomping on the eaglets a couple of times and getting blown over by the wind, before finally settling on Dakotas favorite spot to hang his head right next to the trunk where the cam mount is.

Mom finally brought in a snack early afternoon that Arky mostly consumed. Dakota was bonked and wisely decided he could wait for the next delivery. Finally about 3:30pm Dad came home with a nice large fishy and the big meal of the day commenced. Arky was first up again and did bonk Dakota again but Dakota did get his fair share and two well stuffed crops were seen. Between the two of them and Mom swallowing the tail there was nothing left of that fish but some scales and a short piece of fishghetti on the left rail. They both went back to staying out of the wind and napping and Mom joined them after a trip to her feaking spot on the low branch. The drizzle and wind continued into the evening and darkness fell as it began to fog up.

Hope your Moanday went well in spite of any bad weather you may have had. There is no more rain in the forecast for the rest of the week at the nest so drying out will commence tomorrow. We’ll see you on the nest in the morning!

Nest Update 5-13-14 – Drier Talons And A Greening Day

Good Evening, Fellow Perchologists!!

A night without rain is a great way to start the day. As daytime brightened the skies there was still a lot of residual clouds hanging about but as the day progressed the sun came out at times and Mom and Dad both turned the nest contents over several times to help dry things out. Arky and Dakota were well fed on nestovers and looked on Mom and Dad’s household chores as just interruptions to their naps. Late morning saw a tasty fishy land on the nest and crops were topped up once again. On first panning today the goose nest looked forlorn and abandoned. Eggs can be seen there but Mom and Dad Goose were across the way hanging out in the grass on the shore and paying no more attention to their old homestead.

Nest failure is very common in all bird species and in Mother Natures grand plan it is all a part of the process. While a nest may fail here where there were goslings last year, somewhere else there is a nest that failed last year that has a full compliment of young this year. It is hard to watch sometimes and we wish we could save them all but interfering with that process is probably the worst thing man could do. The itch to interfere is one that should not often be scratched.

Early afternoon saw another aquatic avian brought to the nest to serve as the meals for the lazy part of the day. As Mom fed Arky and Dakota we saw what appeared, at first, to be another egg. A whitish internal organ was exposed and a collective groan went up from the watchers. As the feeding progressed Mom moved it around a bit and it became clear that it wasn’t big enough to be an egg. Mom confirmed this when she gulped it down when she finished stuffing the kids.

Dad caught the big fish of the day around 5:30pm and crops were again stuffed to fullness. More nest renovations ensued after dinner and the nestover fish was covered. In the early evening Mom brought the fish back to the surface of the nest and when Dad came home a little later it was clear that he had designs on the fish remnant. Mom let him know again that she wasn’t going to allow him to nosh it down. She grumped at him with her low squees and moved to take the fish away. They stared at each other again and Dad finally moved off a bit and began looking for other nestovers. He found some old pelt buried on the left side of the nest and Mom made a move to grab that away, too. Dad again realized he wasn’t going to win and hopped across to the fledge perch and ignored her as the sun set. Darkness fell with Mom on the nest and Dad posing for us on the yonder branch. After dark BBC again panned to the pond and we were treated to the moon reflecting in the still waters. Hopefully if it’s clear tomorrow night as well they can get a shot of the moon as it rises. Tomorrow night is Howl Night as it’s a full moon.
