Nest Update 7-9-14 – A Tasty Fishy And A Full Branching!

Good Evening, Fellow BranchLeapers!!

As the day started with calm winds and copious sunshine it looked to be a very nice Hump Day in the cottonwood. The cam was on the nest most of the morning until we lost the feed around 10am. It came back up about 1230pm just in time for a fishy delivery to the nest. Daki came fluttering down from his high perch and claimed it for his own. Arky was heard in the tree but didn’t come to the nest to vie for possession. Daki then had himself a real nice lunch of tasty fishy and filled his crop. He went up to the mount perch to digest and feak his beak. After a few minutes Mom came down and Daki let her know he was not happy she was going to finish his fish. Finally he jumped down to the nest and Mom shared what was left with him by feeding him bites. She, of course, got the tail for her efforts.

Daki then retired to Arky’s low branch perch and spent the afternoon preening, crop dropping and napping away the warm hours of the day. A couple of times it looked like he was going to try a leap across to the fat branch where Dad sometimes sits but he changed his mind every time. Well, until early evening, that is.

Around 7 in the evening he finally decided it was time to go. He was fairly far out on the low branch and he made the leap across to the branch that hangs down toward the ground from Dad’s perch branch. He hung out there for a while and then made the leap back to where he started. Some were saying he fledged and some were saying No he only branched as that is part of the nest tree. I like to give him credit for at least half a fledge as he bravely leapt across a 75 foot fall with grace and aplomb. I hope he finds his way to the larger part of the sky tomorrow and plays games with his sister on the silky Minnesota breezes. As darkness fell he was sitting on that perch where he landed dreaming of flights to come.

On to the vids and pics of the day.

So you can compare intruder juvies here is the video from the day the cam came back on this year that shows the intruder. I think they look very similar.

Nest Update 6-22-14 – Toes For Breakfish and Twister For Dinner!

Good Evening, Fellow TalonNibblers!!

First, an apology. Things just came crashing together last night and today so I didn’t get the post written that I intended to. I hope you enjoyed the NYT Opinion article I linked to today. Sorry if I spoiled your Sunday morning coffee by not having a blog up for you to read. 🙂

Sunday started mostly without any (sun that is) and it stayed cloudy through most of the day. Breakfish was also a little thin as the parents landed sans food and Dakota had to resort to nibbling on Mom’s toes to remind her that she should bring food with her when she comes to the nest. It was pretty intense as Daki went after her talons 4 times before she bailed off the nest to save her toes. The vid below shows it well.

The rest of the day was squees, naps, laps and a long session on the trunk with Dakota leading the way this time. Lots of great scaps were had and it was fun to watch them gingerly shift around on the trunk. I am sure as their confidence grows they will treat the trunk as just another place to hang out.

Dinner, in the early evening, was an adventure. Not having any breakfish or snacks during the day primed Dakota and Arky for a mantlefest when food did arrive. The first to arrive was Mom (I think) with a tasty fishy that had seen better days but was nonetheless scored by Dakota upon landing. It did look like a game of Eagle Twister as they battled for it. Kota kept control for a bit until Arky managed the steal and Kota went into sulky mode. Arky nibbled for a bit hoping Mom would return and feed her. Kota tried to sneak a bite or two from the tail but Arky fended him off. Next thing we know is Dad landed with a chipmunk and another round of Twister ensued. At the end of that it was Arky with the chipmunk and Kota with the fish. Kota went to work on the fish and managed to consume the head and a portion of the body by the time we saw the fish again. Mom landed while they were nibbling on things and after a few minutes went up the trunk to watch. Arky wasn’t making much progress on the furry rodent so Mom came back down and stole it away. She started to feed Arky who also pushed Kota off of the fish so she could have both. Kota went into stealth mode and watched as his sibling got the majority of the meal again. Arky behaves more and more like Harmon every day. That boy could squee and steal food with the best of them.

After dinner Kota squeed for some more food but since none was forthcoming he gave up and they both settled in for a long summers nap.

In other news Mama Deer has dropped her fawn and both were seen on cam today. The river is still high and expected to crest tomorrow. The yonder chat has sunk to new lows of discourse and I would recommend you avoid it if at all possible. I love that the former mods were accused of causing all the strife over there today when we don’t even post over there due to the hostility shown to us when we do. Also, please don’t trust anything you are told over there by anyone but ShoebuttonNBG. Do your own research and make up your own minds. I am tempted here to call out those I feel are causing all the problems in the cam Social Stream but as a wise man once said “Never argue with the ignorant. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience”. If you are looking for a friendlier place to chat we would love for you to join us at our SS! The link is in the footer below.

Nest Update 6-2-14 -Three Cheers For Fast Moving Fronts!

Good Evening, Fellow SunAficionados!!

The prediction for the nest was rain for a good part of the day Monday but as usual they were a bit off with that estimate. The morning dawned beautiful and the drying out process began. Dad delivered a big tasty fishy for breakfish and everyone got to chow down and fill their crops. The day consisted of lots of preening, napping, and wingersizing. It was a good thing they had a big fishy for breakfish as the cupboard was bare for the rest of the day. Arky and Dakota both took to nibbling on anything in the nest that looked the least bit promising to provide a little nourishment.

Mom and Dad treated us to a couple of nice fly-ins and out as the panner was looking around today. We also spotted another turtle by the old goose nest and it looked like he helped himself to one of the eggs that remain there. Hope he doesn’t mind the smell of month old rotten eggs. One of our resident deer was seen feeding along the path in again today and at one point it was joined nearby by a red-winged blackbird. Unfortunately, Granny’s swift dark-coloured animal was no where to be seen today. The panner also gave us a look at the muddy waters flowing past the nest. No wonder not very many fish are caught from there.

As the day wore the kids ran down and slept more than anything else. As darkness fell they were snoring away contentedly on the nest as a Parent kept watch from the high perch.

Nest Update 5-18-14 – Fish And Chips For A Sunny Sunday!

Good Evening, Fellow NestWingWavers!!

Breakfish came very early as the main course was already on the nest. Dad delivered it last night so everyone could get an early start to the day. Arky and Dakota were fairly active today compared to the last few days. They preened, pranced around the nest, played Scare the Chatters, practiced nestorations and started wingersizing in earnest. And of course napped in-between all of those things. Dad even went to Sticks Depot and came back with a huge rail that just dropped into place on the left side of the nest. He even managed not to hit anyone with it. The chips of the day was one of the local resident chipmunks. He was the midday snack to top off crops again before the afternoon’s festivities.

The afternoon was a kind of a Follow my Leader session. Arky would wingersize then Dakota would wingersize. Arky would preen then Dakota would preen. Dakota would nap then Arky would nap, Arky would PS…well you get the idea. They both got in lots of exercise, tanning and naps.

Dinner was a fine northern pike that went down the hatches fairly quickly. And wonder of wonders Arky let Dakota nosh first without protest or bonk. They both got plenty to eat and Mom as is her wont swallowed the tail.  A long carpet turning session followed dinner and the kids helped out as they could. Mom finally went up to the high perch and BBC parked the cam looking at the pond. We saw several nice flyways and fly-ins as Mom and Dad cruised around the near neighborhood. As darkness finally fell we watched the travelers return home in anticipation of the new work week.

Nest Update 4-25-14 – A Bonking And Brilliantly Beautiful Day!

Good Evening, Fellow SunShiners!!

As is usually the case after a storm the day on the nest was gorgeous. Sunshine, lollipops and rainbows…. oops wrong song. The cam was down for a bit again this morning but when it came back on we were treated to a lovely day with lots of feedings, bonkings, and diggings. Nestovers were the order of the day and Dad even resurrected some that looked like they were from last year. Arky, Dakota and Skye would beak wrestle (bonk) at the drop of a hat today. Skye started most of them which is good to see as it shows she is no shrinking violet. Arky finished most of them with a few good whacks to each of the other ones and then standing proudly with wings spread like she was saying “I am the Queen of the Nest!” Dad put a damper on her by burying her a couple of times in stuff he dug from the nest.

Both he and Mom seemed intent on airing out the contents of the nest today. They dug around a lot and in the process it seems they have buried Frankie the duck egg for the time being. He was spotted by a couple of chatters early today but has not been seen since. Maybe we will see him  when Mom and Dad decide to rearrange the furniture again.

Mama Goose also looked to be enjoying her day when BBC would pan to the island. Dad Goose was spotted on the shore across from her just lazing about. There was a noticeable absence of other aquatic waterfowl today on the pond. Hopefully they have not left for good and will return as it is nice to see them and Dad and Mom need something to chase later in the season.

The feedings today went very well with all of the eaglets getting a fair share of what was offered. Full crops and food comas were the order of the day. The eaglets are practicing for the start of the “Scare The Chatters” season by making short jaunts around the nest that are getting closer and closer to the edge. Please don’t worry about this as it is totally natural for them to want to gaze out of the nest at what one day will be their playground.

Also I keep hearing the usual complaints about Ustream not working as well as it should. Tomorrow I will republish the blog post I did last year that shows just how hard it is for the pictures we see to get to your computer. Maybe after reading that you will have a little better appreciation for what it takes. This is not television and there are a lot of things between you and the nest that can go wrong. The same applies to the Social Stream and Chat. So please cut Ustream a little slack as we are but one of thousands of channels they handle every day. Thanks!

It was another quiet evening on the nest and as darkness fell Mom and the kids settled in for a nice spring nap.

On to the vids of the day.

Dragonlainey is on the road until Sunday and will not be doing any vids until they get settled in again. Birdbrain56 has some really nice vids for us today as she does every day. Thanks, BB56.
