Nest Update 6-28-14 – Big Brunch And A Small Storm

Good Evening, Fellow MimosaMakers!!

Saturday dawned early (don’t they all this time of year?) and Arky and Dakota were up and at ’em early also doing laps, wingersizing, taking trips out on the branch, and up the trunk. Mom and Dad made it a memorable brunch by first bringing a full size aquatic avian and then a fish to the nest. The usual squabbles accompanied the arrival of the bird but when the fish arrived the mood seemed to settle down and A & D traded off having servings from both bits of prey. At one point it seemed that there might be nestovers if only for a short while. The rest of the prey was consumed over the course of the morning and full crops led to a calm and lazy day on the nest. Some stick play was noted and some rails were rearranged. Dakota was still playing games with Arky pretending he had something tasty and Arky would rush in from her branch or the trunk to see what it was.

A line of storms formed south of the nest in the early afternoon and brushed by the nest area with just a minimum of rain falling on the nest. The eagles were lucky as that batch of storms caused flooding and mayhem in the Twin Cities for the rest of the day. After the rain Mom and Dad repaired to the far power pole perch for some privacy and peace and quiet. The panner was kept busy trying to keep track of where everyone was and did a fine job of that. The evening hours saw Mom return to the high perch accompanied by squees from A & D when they thought there might be more food being delivered. When they realized this wasn’t the case they each settled in to a spot for the night, Arky on her branch under the cam mount and Dakota on the mount itself just off the trunk perch. As darkness fell another light show from a storm to the south gave us glimpses of Dakota’s silhouette against an angry sky.

Oh, and before I forget we thought we had another sighting of Chatterus Spyonicus today but it seemed they were more interested in the ruminants dining on whatever is growing in the field across the road than the eagles. So I guess we sighted just the common variety of Citizenus Deerlookerus that can be found almost anywhere. Oh, well!

Nest Update 6-11-14 – Nest Laps And A Jump Up the Trunk!

Good Evening, Fellow NestLapTimers!!

It started as a typical mid-week day on a beautiful eagles nest in beautiful central Minnesota. Arky and Dakota greeted the day with crop drops, wingwhaps and some squees to Mom and Dad for a tasty fishy for breakfish. This must have motivated Dad as he came back to the nest around 0930 with a lovely large fishy that Arky performed a textbook mantle on. Mom landed and a three way food tussle began. Mom won of course and the fish feed began with everyone getting a good share. The cam went off the air towards the last of the feeding and we missed seeing who got the tail. I bet it was Mom!

When the cam came back on the kids were napping after the morning feed. The rest of the day was a typical day with more naps, lots of wingersizing, both Arky and Kota taking laps around the nest and lots of staring at the countryside that they will be exploring when they finally figure out what those wings are for. They also threw in some beakering sessions to keep things interesting.

The highlight of the early evening was Arky taking the first step off the nest. She leapt up the trunk about a foot and half above the prone Dakota who looked at her like “What’s all this, then??”. She didn’t stay up there very long but it was good to see these two are staying ahead of schedule like they have with everything else so far.

As darkness settled in the weather started to get disturbed. A thunderstorm arrived just after full dark and gave the eagles and us a lovely sound and light show for about an hour and a half. I hope Friday nights skies are clear so BBC can get us a good shot of the pond in the full moon light.

Nest Update 5-19-14 – Talk About a Moanday!

Good Evening, Fellow ReallyDampPerchers!!

I once saw a joke sign that said “On this date, in this place, nothing much happened”. Kinda describes the nest today perfectly. The youngsters slept in this morning and Mom and Dad didn’t bring in breakfish. Some nibbles were scrounged from the nestovers under the carpet in the nest but it seemed like everyone was just waiting for the weather to break. And break it did. Around mid-morning the first of two waves of rain hit. That one wasn’t too bad but the second more than made up for it. Thunder, lightning, high winds and lots more rain soaked the eagles and made life a little miserable on the nest. All in, the nest area received 1.42 inches of rain today which is about 3 times what was forecast. Arky and Dakota looked more like soggy Koosh balls than eaglets after the storms. Late morning Mom brought what looked like a lichen covered tree to the nest. You can see it on the right side of the nest. Dad, not to be outdone, brought in a treetop that he had trouble placing. He tried several different places, in the process stomping on the eaglets a couple of times and getting blown over by the wind, before finally settling on Dakotas favorite spot to hang his head right next to the trunk where the cam mount is.

Mom finally brought in a snack early afternoon that Arky mostly consumed. Dakota was bonked and wisely decided he could wait for the next delivery. Finally about 3:30pm Dad came home with a nice large fishy and the big meal of the day commenced. Arky was first up again and did bonk Dakota again but Dakota did get his fair share and two well stuffed crops were seen. Between the two of them and Mom swallowing the tail there was nothing left of that fish but some scales and a short piece of fishghetti on the left rail. They both went back to staying out of the wind and napping and Mom joined them after a trip to her feaking spot on the low branch. The drizzle and wind continued into the evening and darkness fell as it began to fog up.

Seems like perfect day for a nap!

Strange, it seems that it takes almost as many words to describe not a lot going on as it does to describe a full day. Hmmm, I’ll have to ponder that a bit at some future time.

Hope your Moanday went well in spite of any bad weather you may have had. There is no more rain in the forecast for the rest of the week at the nest so drying out will commence tomorrow. We’ll see you on the nest in the morning!

Nest Update 5-07-14 – Heat, Humidity And A Flashy Day’s End!

Good Evening, Fellow SweatMoppers!!

It was a sultry spring day on the nest. 70˚ temps and lots of moist air coming up from down south made for a day of naps and lazing about. It was cloudy most of the day so at least the eaglets weren’t roasting in the sun. Can’t wait until the mighty cottonwood leafs out so they get a little shade.

First breakfish was nestovers. Mom decided that wasn’t good enough and went to the Flying Fish Market and came home with a whopper. Crops were properly filled and Mom and Dad took turns bringing in new grass for the naps to come. About mid-morning Arky and Dakota squared off for a bonkfest. Dakota gave as good as he got before finally going down to defeat. It’s good to see him finally standing up for himself.  Sound went out for a bit midday but when it came back on the monthly tornado siren test was in progress. It’s a scary sound to hear those but they have saved many lives.

Lunch was nestover fishcakes and afterward naps were the order of the day. Late in the afternoon another coot gave its all and dinner was served. Everyone was sated and they settled in for the evening. After it became deep dark lightning could be seen and it rained a bit at the nest. The storms just skirted the nest area but BBC panned the cam to the pond view and we were treated to a light show that continues to this hour. I hope the rest of the storms miss the nest, too.

It was a fine day in the cottonwood today. The kids are growing so fast that sometimes each hour brings change. Feathers are popping out all over and clown feet are getting bigger. I hope you all are spending at least some time with us on the nest. We’ll see you there tomorrow!

Nest Update 4-20-14 – Easter On The Nest With A Duck Egg Hunt

Good Evening, Fellow AvianOvumHunters!!

If you haven’t gotten your vote in for the names please go here: Vote Here For Your Name Picks!

Hope all of you and yours had a wonderful Easter. The day on the nest was positively lethargic after yesterdays excitement. Mom and Dad took turns in the morning feeding and nest sitting the eaglets. Arky and M8 were eager for food while M9 was still working up to participating in the feeding frenzies on a regular basis.

In the afternoon Mom took an extended sabbatical from the nest and Dad ran the show for most of the rest of the day. The duck egg was spotted in the nest around 10:30am looking intact and again around 4:30pm while M9 was using it for a cushion. After that time Dad did some furniture re-arranging and buried it completely. We don’t know if it survived in one piece but I keep thinking how funny it would be in 27 or so days to have a duckling stick it’s bill up out of the nest and ask “Whats for lunch?”.

Most of the meals during the day were nestovers which helped clean the area of gross looking things and kept the eaglets coming back for more. Early evening Mom finally returned with the catch of the day, a nice fresh half of a fish to cap off a wonderful Easter Sunday on the nest. Not to be outdone by Mom, Dad left when she returned with the fish and and came back just before full dark with a lovely half of a walleye (we think) for breakfish in the morning.

Arky and M8 took to wandering around the nest as far as their widdle talons would carry them (which wasn’t very far) and M9 even got into the act by crawling out from under Dad and working on his tan a bit with his siblings. Toward the end of the day the two elder siblings would sit patiently together for feedings with the youngest just behind them vying for some attention also. All three seemed to get plenty to eat and full crops were seen all around. Mom took over nest sitting at dusk while Dad went to the high perch across the way to dry off after his fishing expedition.

Update: This is very late as yours truly took a long nap after a very tasty and filling Easter dinner and as I publish this lightning can be seen and thunder heard on the cam. Neat to see flashes of Mom on the nest as the thunder booms all around her.

Only a few vids today as our videographers enjoyed Easter with their families. Thanks dragonlainey and BirdBrain56 for taking some time from your celebrations to give us these.
